Our business can play an important role in catalyzing the economic development and social wellbeing of host governments and communities through job creation, provisioning local goods and services, community investments, and paying taxes and royalties. We can contribute to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals by being a leader in the areas where we can have the greatest impact. We are also committed to a strong governance structure, including multi-stakeholder engagement and transparency around payments to governments, which increases accountability, promotes trust, creates mutual value and reduces corruption.

Trout farm empowers community
A trout farm was built near Cajamarca, Peru with a $90,000 donation from our Yanacocha mine. Using clean, treated water from our mining operation, the farm produces over 20 tonnes of trout yearly and supplies three local restaurants. This community-run farm diversifies the local economy and offers a sustainable, healthy food source.
Local Procurement
Sourcing from local suppliers helps catalyze economic development, mitigate risk and maximize opportunities by building community and government support and potentially reduce costs.
Local Employment
Hiring locally benefits host communities in many ways including reduced poverty, improved skills, a more diverse workplace and the opportunity to achieve long-term growth and economic diversification.
Volunteerism
Volunteering allows employees to personally connect with the community around them to better understand the social context and external challenges – an understanding that they can bring to their work regardless of their department – while making a difference in the local community.

Celebrating Indigenous Culture and Heritage in Australia
Tanami and Boddington celebrated indigenous culture and heritage through food, art, language, music and cultural artifacts during National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee week. As part of our commitment to invest in local people and create employment opportunities for them, nearly half (45%) of KCGM’s first year apprentices are of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent.
Indigenous Peoples Management
We recognize the unique rights, culture, and history of indigenous peoples. We will seek to obtain their consent when a project is located on land they traditionally own or use, and is likely to impact them.
Respecting Human Rights
We recognize our responsibility to respect fundamental human rights, mitigate risks, ensure those impacted by our activities have access to remedies, and help realize many human rights through positive contributions that strengthen capacity and empower communities.
Cultural Heritage Management
We seek to protect tangible and intangible cultural resources in our areas of influence and prevent unauthorized or undesired disturbance.
Land Acquisition & Resettlement
We avoid resettlement where possible. When alternatives are not available, we work to ensure affected people and communities are engaged to make informed decisions, adverse impacts are minimized, and livelihoods and living conditions are restored or improved.
Artisanal Small-Scale Mining (ASM) Management
ASM occurs mainly around operations in Ghana and Suriname and we have developed a holistic strategic focused on security, managing impacts, collaborating to improve livelihood choices and promoting information sharing internally and externally.

Engaging stakeholders for improved watershed management
Newmont’s North America region is working with the Humboldt River Basin Water Authority. Among other activities, we have supported sound management in the watershed by providing reviews and input on regulations and guidelines for water use and rights. This work has resulted in a mutually beneficial relationship as we continue to collaborate on the best way to manage the watersheds where we operate.
