Global Community Support Fund

On April 9th, 2020, Newmont announced the establishment of a US$20 million fund to help host communities, governments and employees combat the COVID-19 pandemic. The Newmont Global Community Support Fund (the Fund) builds upon other local contributions and efforts the Company has implemented in March. “Our purpose to create value and improve lives through sustainable and responsible mining is more relevant now than ever before. The strength of our portfolio of world-class assets across top tier jurisdictions underpins the financial flexibility to take care of our employees, communities and shareholders. I am proud of the way our employees have responded to these challenging times.” – Tom Palmer, CEO Newmont has been closely partnering with local governments, medical institutions, charities and non-governmental organizations to target funds towards addressing the greatest needs with a view to serving as a catalyst for long-term resiliency and future community development. To ensure that the Fund supports communities in a robust and meaningful way, Newmont has worked diligently with local governments to design a plan and has landed on three key areas to ensure that the support is most impactful to our communities, namely, employee and community health, food security and local economic resilience.

Our Workforce

Our values and commitment to our people are central to our decision-making as we weigh short and long-term impacts to our business from the disruptions associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. During these challenging times, we continue to support our employees as much as possible so that they can focus on working safely, staying healthy, and caring for their loved ones and each other. We have learned many lessons over the last few months and we continue to gain insights into how we can further optimize working efficiently while finding new ways to collaborate and connect with each other. As we move forward, we will continue to implement these learnings to ensure that all of us come out the other side stronger than when we went in.

Safety & Wellbeing

Safety is one of Newmont’s core values, and now during the pandemic, the wellbeing, support and care of our workforce is more important than ever. Key to the success of the implementation and adoption of safety and wellbeing measures is frequent communications with our global workforce, First Nations partners and government across the 4 continents and 21 communities in which we operate. Newmont has implemented additional controls and safety protocols at our operations and offices to protect the health and safety of our workforce and neighboring communities. These measures include the following:
  • Strict social distancing protocols and suspension of large indoor gatherings
  • Flexible and remote working plans for employees
  • Enhanced temperature and questionnaire screening at entry points to sites
  • Providing logistical and healthcare support to nearby communities where needed
  • Cancelling all nonessential travel
  • Restricting entrance to sites to business-critical visits, essential deliveries and critical contract workers
  • Increased inventory of hand sanitizer, soap and hygiene supplies
  • Increased frequency of deep cleaning and sanitization of surfaces
  • Mandatory self-quarantine for anyone who has traveled internationally, has flulike symptoms or who has had direct contact with any person known to have COVID-19

Physical and Emotional Wellbeing

Newmont recognizes that as a company, as a community and as individuals, we are facing challenging times. To support the wellbeing of our people as we all work together to reduce the spread of COVID-19, Newmont is paying close attention to both the physical and the emotional needs of our people, providing ongoing guidance and resources to ensure employees and host communities feel and stay healthy. Based on a model of “Support, Prevent, Promote,” key areas include the following:
  • Tips for working at home to ensure a work-life balance
  • Resilience building practices
  • Financial wellness tips
  • Third-party wellness app recommendations that offer fitness, mental health, nutrition and sleep resources
  • Availability of Employee Assistance Programs across regions

Business Continuity

Newmont has implemented additional controls across its operations and offices around the globe to further protect the health and safety of its workforce, their families and neighboring communities while also taking steps to preserve long-term business value. We have been working closely with host communities, First Nations and other indigenous peoples, regional and national governments and health experts to protect our workforce and nearby communities. Newmont has also established a global Supply Chain task force to ensure that we assess all potential risks and develop viable contingency plans that enable us to stay ahead of any potential disruptions to our supply base and corresponding risks to our projects and production. We all can help reduce the spread of COVID-19. We encourage everyone to abide by the World Health Organization’s basic protective measures against the virus, outlined  .

Together While Apart

As we continue to live and work under these new condition, there are creative ways we can remain connected, share our experiences and lift each other’s spirits. While many of our employees and contractors continue to work onsite and others work from home or are in transition, along with physical distancing requirements, feelings of isolation are not uncommon. To help our workforce stay connected and share experiences, we launched Together While Apart, an inclusive campaign to inspire, encourage and support each other while we are physically apart. We would like to thank our workforce for continuing to demonstrate Newmont’s values and – most importantly – for keeping themselves, their families, their colleagues and members of their community healthy and safe during the pandemic. Below are “Together While Apart” moments that different members from our workforce, across the globe, have been sharing.
